Yet, I want to help you make a wise decision when it comes to choosing the right Flat Iron. Nowadays, words come a dime a dozen. But, with this new arsenal of vocabulary, you will be able to secure a good flat iron with effects you will want to showcase and preach about.

Ceramic
These will probably be what you see the most and if you don’t, then it is best to walk away from it. Ceramic plates are the best choice in flat irons. If at all possible 100% ceramic plates is great, but also the most expensive. Reason being ceramic is fragile and rough handling can cause the plates to break or crack. Most ceramic flat irons are reinforced with metal to protect from rough handling. It is wise to never clap the plates together roughly or unnecessary.

All ceramic plates produce negative ions. This helps with creating neutrality in hair. Damaged hair is positively charged. The positive charge on damaged hair keeps the hair follicles open, dry and brittle. Once the charge on the hair is neutralized the hair follicles closes and leads to a smoother hair shaft. Healthy hair is neutral in charge.

Ceramic is great because it creates far more even and diffuse heating. Also, all ceramic plates when heated use “far infrared” heat. This has shown in studies to be the most efficient, gentle way to heat hair. Be warned that prolong exposure to heat will cause unnecessary stress which can lead to damage to your hair in the long run. While, ceramic will cause the least amount of damage you should still use caution.

Nano
Nano is just a prefix that just means small. Nano-ceramic is not ideal if you are looking for a salon strength flat iron. It just means that the presence of ceramic is in small particles. But, there are other good uses for nano technology. Nano silver helps inhibits bacterial growth. Nano titanium helps the heat spread more evenly and adds more shine by increasing the negative ion output of the plates. Nano titanium oxide inhibits chemical build-up which is the lead cause of foul odors. Tourmaline is similar to titanium and helps boost negative ions which create smoother, sleeker results.

Silicone
Some flat irons come with silicone strips on the plates. They ensure equal pressure and heat on varying hair densities. This just helps to make sure that the heat is evenly distributed no matter the hair density of the strands between the plates. However, the strips may need to be replaced more often with repeated usage for the lifetime of the flat iron.

Size
Plates that are 1” – 1.5” are idea for most hair types. Finer hair will require a narrower plate. Plates that are 2” are larger work best with long hair and/or thicker, curlier hair. Plates with rounded edges are great for curls and flips.

Happy New Year!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KwWtqKBfu2U/TyrGd1T13aI/AAAAAAAAAFU/5bqePwChVOs/s320/2012-happy-new-year-wallpaper-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5704590093846961570" />
I know I am about a month late but:

HAPPY NEW YEAR’s!

While I have been gone for a minute, do not think that I have deserted my faithfully followers. That is the idea of opposition. Life is full of it and often at times it can seem like it is meant to break you. But, in reality it is those times of opposition that help to define you as an INDIVIDUAL.

Often, it seems that opposition normally comes in the form of peer pressure; especially for those in some form of transition. But, it is best obliged when you surround yourself with those that you know are in favor of your ideas and concepts. It is important to note that at times it is rare to find someone or something that will agree with you 100% of the time. There should however always be a regard for character and disposition.

WE all want to pride ourselves on being unique and different. But, this does not mean that you should feel ostracized or a target for any form of spite. Often enough you learn that opposition from others is only to define you on their own terms. That is not necessary, nor should it be tolerated.

An important closing point I would like to make is your thumb is in opposition to your fingers. While, it in itself is different it is NECESSARY. Imagine your hand without your thumb; it would make our human life very different. While, the thumb is short and stubby and sticks out to the side, it is also very advantageous.

So I implore you to try this new tactic, the next time you encounter opposition, give it the good thumbs up! You are headed in the right direction…

Time Flies When you are Having Fun

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-43phr-cAoSI/TrS4tDusn1I/AAAAAAAAAEY/aZUY4Brw8p4/s320/2.1251464732.kids-playing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671360915001089874" />

With the recent move and then the failure of my internet connect. October turned into a month of dead internet silence for us. However, we are back with new and improved technology to approach the New Year

What is also interesting to note, is that it seems with the coming of the Holidays there are tons of natural hair events popping up all over the place. It seems every weekend there is an event going on. I myself am finding it hard to keep up with them. A lot of events are literally back to back to each other. While it brings me great joy to see it, my time schedule makes it hard to be at every event. However, I shall try my best to continue to update our website with them as I receive information about various events around the world.

Pretty soon I plan on hosting a few events, but let’s not talk about that just yet. Don’t want to get to far ahead of ourselves.

I would love to hear how everyone’s Halloween turn out. Would be great to see some pics of natural hair on any blaxploitation films costume? In fact, I hope to host just an event come next year. So start your growth challenge and get ready for the best natural hair costume contest, I think Houston is yet to offer.

Plus, it’s that time of theyear when gifts are becoming the necessity. Any recommendations on product that you feel is a MUST have? Let us know and if the response is big enough I am willing to award readers and clients alike

Happy Posting!

Shear Style Hair Show

So this past Wednesday I had the “luxury” of attending the Shear Style Hair Show in Austin presented by naturallycurly.com. I was overly excited because I am a huge fan of the site. I also, was hoping since they sponsored the event, I might get the luxury of meeting some of their staff. So I booked myself for half a day of work and set out on a 2 and ½ hour ride to Austin (it’s not that far, lol!)
I have to admit it was easy getting there thanks to GPS. The event was a blast! There were five top Austin’s hair salons in the house; showcasing style, product and just great friendly smiles and laughter. I felt so much at home, I couldn’t believe I wasn’t in my home city. Each salon had a booth where you could ask them practically anything. As well as, there were some nice giveaways for the product junkies. I snagged a few…lol!

I will say that there were quite a few naturals in the building and I attempted to take as many photos as my small camera would allow, lol! I posted them all to Facebook. So if you aren’t our friend, make sure you friend us so you can see who was in attendance.

There was a catwalk with some hot hair styles because after all it was a hair show. I was overly inspired. While there were hardly any naturals on the catwalk, the heat was on with the styles and hair. The naturally curlies were allowed to have their own show. In fact, the global editor of naturallycurly.com herself hand selected 20 ‘naturals’ to strut their stuff for a free goodie bag! I should have walked but I have stage fright, lol!

All and all it was a FABULOUS event and I would do again in a heartbeat. I want to send a personal shout out to Cassidy Blackwell and to Nature’s Course for allowing me to represent the salon!

Check out the pics!

We have RELOCATED!

It has been a minute since our last blog but I can promise you, it’s an ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS reason why. Nature’s Course has moved our small salon into a larger salon with more stylist and space. The move was expected but then everything fell into place so fast. That one minute we were at our old location and the following week, we were at the new location. So we ask that your pardon our construction, we are still offering our fabulous barber and natural hair care. But, we also offer full salon services. So if you are not natural, it’s cool…we can still provide. Check us out or stop on by. Look forward to hearing more great developments!!!!!!!!!

We are now located at:
1711 Rosewood St
Houston, TX 77004

The Journey thru the World of Product: Touch

It never ceases to amaze me how, on one end there is product out there that price wise makes me feel like I am purchasing a new house. Then there is product that you can pick up from the Dollar Store that works a hundred times better. While, I personally said that I would never do product reviews. I think it is safe to say that never is also a word that always makes me do 180 on whatever I follow with that word.

I am currently in the process of using Design Naturals product line and I must say I have strong mixed feelings about the product. However, I plan to write a full review on the product within the coming weeks. I want to give the line a few weeks of attention before I make any brash response about the product.

I also wanna say, that for me feeling the consistency of the product is a great way to test product before you even buy/apply it. On some level you should know what you want the product to do. While you may be searching for a butter/cream, then check to make sure the consistency is that of what you hair needs. The same approach goes for a gel.

It is hard to address all the concerns that can be associated with each hair type, in this blog. It is safe to gather, what you know your hair to need and search for a product that feels, in touch, what you want it to do. I know there are a few products out there that can fool you, I still believe they are few and in between. But, this journey through the world of product should seem to be informative. I plan to take my readers on my personal journey. This maybe longer than I anticipated but fun comes in many shape and sizes. At least, that is what I am hoping for. Until next time…..happy trails!

Summer Hair

So for some the summer has come in with scorching heat and blood thirsty mosquitos. (Houston, tx) But, that has not deterred us from the sun bathing, beaches and pools. No reason not to enjoy the pleasures of high temperatures. But, for our hair it can rack havoc if certain precautions are not taken.

I say it a lot and will continue to preach about DEEP CONDITIONING, feel free to read any of the previous blogs which talk about what, when and where.
If you have colored hair, you know that the sun will fade your color especially if it’s any derivative of red. There are tons of color shampoos/conditioners on the market that help restore and slow the effects of the sun’s ability to fade color. Also, don’t be afraid to cover your hair. The UV from the sun does damage to your hair too. It can become brittle, dry and become prone to breakage.

For those that love to swim, remember that the chlorine is great for keeping the pool water sparkling and blue. It has very harsh effects on the hair on the other hand. One rule of thumb is to wet your hair prior to getting in the pool. This helps keep the chlorine out because you hair will become full of the water and the chlorine will be unable to penetrate the hair shaft. A even better rule of thumb is to apply and leave conditioner in your hair while you reclaim you water legs. This will block the chemicals of the pool better and provide nourishment to your hair.

For those that aren’t afraid, rinsing your hair with beer after your sun/water exposure also helps restore the proper pH balance to your hair. This provides a very short temporary replenish to your hair until you are able to address it properly. While, this may sound bogus, try it and see. Please keep in mind that we are not condoning drinking, just good healthy hair techniques. So enjoy the heat and enjoy your summer. Enjoy the frills of having a natural and not being afraid of the water. I often find myself asking my clients, “How often do you detangle/comb your hair?” (This would be a good time for you to answer, smile) Often enough, I shake my head and reply not often enough.
It is amazing how many ‘naturals’ do not detangle and then get upset when the stylist is not using what they consider to be enough TLC with their hair. If you detangled your hair often enough, then the stylist and you would be able to tell when it comes time to style your hair. I have heard many excuses and I don’t plan on them to stop. But, the reality is if you don’t “train” your curls then it is even hard to “tame” your curls.

Going natural doesn’t mean that you can get away with doing less to your hair. This is a very common misconception. Often times it requires the same amount of attention that you were given it before. Regardless of how curly your hair type, it is very important to make sure that your curls are not allowed to run too free. In the process, they can develop into matted hair, slipknots, and create severe breakage. While, most ‘naturals’ run from this idea it is one of the best things you can do to help maintain healthy hair.

If your ‘natural hair’ likes to resist, here a couple of noteworthy key points. It is always easiest to detangle while your hair is wet with conditioner in it. There are quite a few detangling shampoos and conditioners on the market. They are your best bet for the fight against tangles. Another good investment is a GOOD DEEP CONDITIONER. I can’t stress it enough how important a good deep conditioner is. After continued usage, the results are priceless. It is also good practice to start at the tip of your hair and move backwards up the length of the hair to the root, when combing tangles out. You can start with a wide tooth comb and then move down a size, there are also a few good brushes to use before you attempt to comb.

Also, take your time. Attempting to rush thru the process can cause a lot of pain and breakage. A good solution is to section the hair into smaller sections. After you complete a section then braid, twist(or whatever makes you happy) and then move on to the next section.

After awhile, your hair will submit and detangling will no longer become a chore. While at times, it can be extremely discouraging. The continued practice of healthy habits creates healthy hair.

Proper hair pH, do you know?

I will admit this is quite an in depth matter, because it appeals to the scientist within ourselves. I shall attempt to be brief and thorough. pH is an effective way to measure the acidity or basicity of a solution, or in our case, product. Applying products with a pH range of 4.5 – 5.5 will keep hair, skin and nails to their natural, healthy state. There are a multiple ways of measuring the pH level. Just keep in mind in order to effectively measure the pH the product must contain water and/or have the ability to dissolve in water. Below is a brief chart of common beauty products and their respected pH balances:

SHAMPOOS AND CONDITIONERS
Acid-Balanced Shampoo……………………………………4.5 – 5.5
Alkaline Shampoo…………………………………………………7.0 – 9.0
Acidifying conditioner…………………………………2.2 – 5.5
Deep Penetrating Conditioner…………………3.5 – 5.5

PERMS AND RELAXERS
Acid Perm……………………………………………………6.9 – 7.2
Alkaline Perm…………………………………………8.0 – 9.5
Relaxer………………………………………………………11.5 – 14.0
Neutralizer………………………………………………3.0 – 7.0

COLORS AND LIGHTENERS
Oil Bleach…………………………………………………8.0 – 9.5
Powder Bleach………………………………………10.0 – 11.0
Tints……………………………………………………………9.5 – 10.5
Hydrogen Peroxide………………………………below 4.0

FINISHING PRODUCTS
Mousse……………………………………………………5.5 – 6.0
Gel……………………………………………………………4.5 – 5.5
Hair Spray…………………………………………5.0 – 6.0

SKIN PRODUCTS
Cleanser…………………………………………………4.5 – 5.5
Toner…………………………………………………………5.5 – 6.0
Moisturizer…………………………………………5.5 – 6.0

NAIL PRODUCTS
Polish Remover……………………………………5.0 – 6.0
Cuticle Crème………………………………………5.5 – 6.0
Hand Lotion……………………………………………4.5 – 5.5

For the natural that isn’t afraid to take it to another level, this would be a good indicator for your DIY treatments/products. By attempting to measure, you ensure that you are not doing unnecessary damage to your hair. Just because you are using “natural” products may not mean you are getting an effective pH balance.

I would recommend purchasing maybe nitrazine paper, pH pencil and/or pH meter. There is science in doing hair and this is where going to a professional can have many advantages. However, reading a blog can be just as effective if you know where to look. Happy trails!

The Big Chop: REVISTED

I will admit I have been natural almost all my life. But, my last natural hairstyle lasted for a little over 6 years. I had long flowing ‘locs. They were pretty long, in fact they were BSL, bra strap length. Or in laymen terms they went down to the middle of my back. It was great and it was wonderful. There was never a decrease in the amount of compliments I got from when I started up into the day I cut them. But, the reality of it was I tired of the length.

The argument I keep getting is, “OMG, they were so long? Why would you do that?” And/or “That was 6 years, how could you do that?” Sometimes, I wonder if they are horders, lol (inside joke)! I had them styled and cut, the only thing I hadn’t done was color them. That is kinda an understatement the Sun had started to bleach them. But, all in all I am very happy with my decision.

The freedom to wash and go is exciting. I can now workout without the extra heat and weight. I can sleep without a satin cap. I no longer have to worry about blow drying my hair. I also love the new fun I will have with tryin all the natural hairstyles I can do on my clients on my own hair. I am excited. I kinda feel like I am natural all over again. I sometimes forget that it isn’t there and when I run upto people I know they are clueless. Then when they realize, I get the same argument. But, it is always followed by how they love my new hairstyle.

I feel like I have been freed from oppression and the ability to do whatever I want has been returned to me. I seriously recommend the BC to any and everybody. But, in the meantime, I am so goin to enjoy being me. Currently, I am on the search for perfect product. So look forward to the reviews that will follow of the products that work best for my naturally, curly hair!

Florida Evan's Hair

I am hoping that everyone’s Memorial Day weekend was well spent. Tuesday and it is time for most of the working world to return to work, even us, lol! However, I have decided today to touch on a different issue. This weekend I had the luxury of meeting 3 young ladies partying to celebrate a friend’s birthday. While our encounter was completely by chance, I do believe we meet for reasons that only time will tell.

However, once the girls realize I was a natural hair stylist. The questions begin and I answered as many as I could give the circumstances; we were partying on a boat on a freshwater lake just outside of Houston. One of the young ladies asked a very particular question, which was beyond my scope. She wanted to go natural but wanted something that would look professional in her ‘majority’ job setting. She didn’t want to do braids, weaves, or wigs. She even went as far as to say she didn’t want Florida Evan’s hair from Good Times. Most of the group laughed, but I actually was a little offended.

On so many levels one could comment on this issue. However, as a natural hair stylist that is all about promoting healthy options and natural hair, I am stepping down from that role to make a personal point. The role that Ester Rolle played as Florida Evan’s on Good Times represents so much more than her hair. More importantly, her hair was an inspiration because it shows that she didn’t bend to confirm when clearly even at the bottom she was still a POSITIVE role model. She was a representative of ‘minorities’ and in the end she still succeed in the ‘majority’ world without confirming.

To me this particular young lady was guilty of wanting the title and glam of saying she was natural, but still wanted the comfortable of feeling like a conformed ‘minority.’ In my experience, being different is what makes you more valuable and respected. Attempting to confirm to an idea that doesn’t naturally come to you is dangerous and detrimental. While, I am not stating that every girl in the world should go natural. I do believe that whatever you decision is, do not cause judgment on someone that is willing to do something that you have no ‘balls’ to do because you are afraid of what the ‘others’ may think.

I hope that in time she realizes that her mind setting is what keeps here where she is and not her ‘professional’ job. Wake up! If we as ‘humans’ are to grow then you need to learn your self-worth and hold that foremost in a world where one small step can and will make a difference. Florida Evans, we respect you. More importantly Esther Rolle is/was a female role model that is worthy of refuting any bad call made on her hair or who she was.

Personal Statement to YOU, the reader

I just wanted to take the time and say thank you to everyone that reads our blogs. In order to understand its effectiveness, it is best to understand the true chemical process at work and the history of Henna itself.

The henna plant only thrives in semi-arid zones; such as subtropical Africa, southern Asia and northeastern Australia. It has been in use since the late 1700’s. There are historic reports of it being used during the Roman Empire, which dates back to 400 C.E. It’s most noteworthy component is Lawsone which is found primarily concentrated within the leaves; even higher concentrations are in the steam of the leaf.

Henna is a vegetable dye. In its purest form, produces reddish highlights in the hair. Natural colors other than the characteristic henna reds are produced by combining henna with metallic salts, such as lead, silver and copper. Repeat usage with generate more of a color change. Hennaed hair sometimes cannot be permed because the reforming solution can’t penetrate evenly through the buildup. It has also been shown that the metals in a henna compound may, in some cases, react violently with other chemicals used in traditional hair products; causing further damage.

Its important to note how the chemical process works. The lawsone chemically bonds with the protein, keratin, in skin and hair resulting in a strong permanent stain that last until the skin or hair is shed. Notice two things, one it is a permanent stain. Traditional color works by lifting and/or re-depositing color. Henna works by permanently staining the hair through bonding with the keratin in the hair. Meaning that the only way to remove it, is to remove it and the bonded protein, keratin. Keratin is a key structural component of hair, nails and skin.

To date, there is no effective way of removing the stain, or color change, provided through henna treatments. Henna fades on skin because the skin cells die and then are replaced. However, hair is already dead and cannot be repaired in the same manner. While too many these may seem like a “natural” alternative to traditional coloring methods; there is no correctional formula to date for damage.

Know your facts and know your alternatives. But, most of all respect your hair and provide it with healthy alternatives. Everything natural is not good for you. Nor is all chemical compounds the best. However, in achieving healthy hair we are one and the same. I do not to take sides because it all is a personal decision. What I want to comment on is some do’s and don’ts especially after an incident with a new client.

I had a young natural come in and she had decided that she wanted to get her ends colored. It was an easy remedy. After we discussed which color and if you she wanted permanent or rinse. I went on with the process. Now one more important fact is, if you have EVER colored your hair before it is very important to let your stylist know. More importantly a stylist that deals with color often enough, most of the time, will ask you. I hate to argue why this is important. But the bases are that color is a chemical process. Mixing the wrong chemicals/colors can lead to dissatisfactory results. I like this broad definition because it factors in a lot. You may not lose your hair, which is a worst case scenario. But you may get the wrong shade, or it just might not take.

Needless to say, my client never admitted to coloring her hair prior to arriving in my chair. The results were very unsatisfactory. To both of our surprise, the color did not take or so it seemed. I would like to add that we used Professional Salon only color. (very expensive) Apparently, my client had failed to mention that she had already treated her hair with a permanent black dye for darker, richer hair color. I was a slightly upset but then I had to relay this information. Of all the color available on the market, black is completely different. While, you and I may perceive black to be ONE color, it is in fact a combination of colors brought together to reflect that one color that you and I see. Any dye that attempts to reflect black works by depositing color on top of your original color. Other color dyes work by lifting your original color and depositing the new desired color. You see the problem.

Whenever you dye your hair black, with permanent hair dye, and you want to go to a lighter color. You have to lift the black completely out of the hair in order for any other color to take. Otherwise, you will run into the situation I had with a client. It is important to note this for future reference. While, it took longer than expected, she was still able to achieve her desired look, also a little wiser on color dye. As I hope you are too…Happy Trails!
Nature’s Course

Professional and Value: Correlation of Truth

I think now would be a good time to discuss the term professional. By far the best definition I have found online belongs to Wikipedia. They have provided a list of 10 criteria by which defines a professional in a line of work. I would like to take one step further and say that a true professional matches ALL 10 criteria.

Wikipedia Definition
Main criteria for professional include the following:
1. A professional is a person that is paid for what they do. Qualifications have little to do with being a professional as the world's "oldest profession" is strictly a monetary gain career. An amateur maybe more qualified than a professional but they are not paid, thus they are an amateur.
2. Expert and specialized knowledge in field which one is practicing professionally.[6]
3. Excellent manual/practical and literary skills in relation to profession.[7]
4. High quality work
5. A high standard of professional ethics, behavior and work activities while carrying out one's profession (as an employee, self-employed person, career, enterprise, business, company, or partnership/associate/colleague, etc.). The professional owes a higher duty to a client, often a privilege of confidentiality, as well as a duty not to abandon the client just because he or she may not be able to pay or remunerate the professional. Often the professional is required to put the interest of the client ahead of his own interests.
6. Reasonable work morale and motivation. Having interest and desire to do a job well as holding positive attitude towards the profession are important elements in attaining a high level of professionalism.
7. Participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs b : having a particular profession as a permanent career c : engaged in by persons receiving financial return[6]
8. Appropriate treatment of relationships with colleagues. Special respect should be demonstrated to special people and interns. An example must be set to perpetuate the attitude of one's business without doing it harm.
9. Professional Attire
10. A professional is an expert who is master in a specific field.

As a natural hair stylist, I very much so consider myself a professional by all the 10 standards that are listed and yet sometimes clients lose sight of what that means. When a price is set for a particular service a combination of factors have to go into consideration. While, some may feel the value of their money is worth more than they believe. The value of a professional weighs more. I can envision a lot of head shaking at this point, lol! The idea is if I, as a professional, am to exist in that realm the price has to govern that much. I think a great summary of that falls on one word: value.

Often times, I see ‘naturals’ that stand against going to a professional for a multitude of reasons that to them maybe self evident. However, if you measure that professional to the listed criteria, you will find that they fall short. Falling short by one, in my opinion, are grounds to deem them unprofessional. The beauty of all of that is the professional should meet “your interpretation” of those listed, not the other way around.

Here at Nature’s Course we work hard to provide ‘professional’ services. Often times, we as humans like to group individuals into good or bad. I am the first to tell you that we are EXCEPTIONAL. However, don’t just take our word for it. Make an appointment…

Product Junkie, this is for you!

Product Junkie, this is for you!

So I have noticed that there are a lot of “naturals” that flock to products, no matter the expense. Normally, when communicating with them I always remark on the expense of ones. I don’t think they truly understand what I am saying. It makes no sense to spend an arm and a leg for something that is working so-so. At least that is my opinion, in regard to expensive product.

Yet, that is not the reason for this blog. I want to talk about how to effectively measure how well a product works for YOU. The keyword is YOU. I have noticed that a lot of times “naturals” will run out and by something because it works good for someone. It’s amazing that in a lot of cases that someone is someone they don’t personally know. However, word of mouth is by far the best method for a lot of things, lol!

As for measuring how well a product works, first consider if the amount of money is worth the value. In some cases, it’s more name then value. Secondly, I use to argue about who cares what it smells like. But, hair is a form of beauty and who wants to look good and smell awful. *nasty mental image* However, I would recommend when using a product attempt to use the product for at least 2 - 4 weeks before ruling on whether or not it is effective.

You want to attempt to use it in as many different styles and weather as possible. To get the full scoop of how EFFECTIVE the product is. In the end, I am sure it will be good for something. But, there are very few products that do everything in one bottle. Also, try not to load your hair down with any product or variety of products. Sometimes using too many things at one time makes it hard to determine which is BEST. Know the effective use of each product and vary the combination until you get a match that works PERFECTLY for you hair needs.

Recently, a natural came to me asking me about what product should she be using. The minute I touched her hair I was like how many different products are in your hair. The list was of like 5 to 6 different oils. I had to shake my head. That was too many and then you ask her why and she says because she heard they were all good. I am not arguing that they aren’t but what are the true NEEDS of your hair is what you should be asking yourself. In end she had very oily (in touch hair) but overall she was upset with how dry and thirsty her hair seemed. While, I was unable to determine her true needs. I did mention that if she had the opportunity that if she presented her hair without product; I could very easily determine her true hair needs.

While there is a lot to say, I just wanted to touch on some key points that I believe ‘naturals’ should consider when reviewing and determining hair product. Happy Trails!

The Price of Natural Hair

There seems to be a big issue when it comes to “naturals” wanting to come to the salon to get their tresses maintained. Yet, I think it is very important to take into consideration the offset/insight of the price market. Often, we hear others say you get what you pay for. With hair, that is very much so the case. Spend too much and one is trying to understand what all your money paid for, spend not enough and be thoroughly dissatisfied with the finished product.

I just want to talk about the advantages of going to a salon. Far too often I see the negative values, and I like to stay in the positive as much as I can. First and foremost, you know that it is going to take considerable less time than it takes yourself to do it yourself. Secondly, know that the knowledge that your stylist posses about hair has been refined and polished and that what you are getting is the best for what you can expect. Thirdly, the environment is relaxing and most of my clients enjoy the opportunity to lay to rest whatever is on their mind. Sometimes, they fall asleep (LOL). Overall, I do believe that we can all say that we have all had a very pleasant experience and at Nature’s Course, that is what it is about.

As for the matter of value, some feel that the price goes up or down and they feel it shouldn’t. I like to stress the importance of a consultation. That gives you and the stylist a chance to go over your issues and any concerns you and the stylist may have. Consequently it also gives you a chance to understand why the price is what it is. Asking for prices without the stylist truly “looking” at your hair is a horrible indicator of someone that isn’t terribly concerned about OVERALL value.

The price of paying someone to do your hair shouldn’t be overwhelming. However, the joy of setting foot into a salon that delivers an enjoyable experience, vast amount of knowledge and the look of a priceless expression is well worth it. One bad experience shouldn’t be the death of any more experiences. If anything, it should provide more insight towards you making a more informed choice.

Recession Proof Hair Prices

The news constantly talks about the recession. It is still a challenge that affects human kind. According to the CDC, the Black/African American community is the highest risk group for HIV/AIDS. In fact, the majority of new cases of infection are rising within our community. While, the need for prevention and treatment run rampart and science fights daily to bring new methods for prevention and treatment, funds are still needed.

It’s sad to say but with the statistics as high as they are, it is safe to say that everyone knows someone that is fighting with the disease and it is not an easy fight. While you may think, I don’t know anybody. Statistics prove that you do. That person may/may not know or want you to know. But, we are all affected because it affects humankind as a whole. It knows no discretion and can be a life altering change.

So we at Nature’s Course stand for community and do what we can, when we can. We have entered a gift certificate into the Starbucks 7th Annual Silent Art Auction to help raise money for the Aids Foundation of Houston. All of the money raised goes directly to helping with the fight. It’s a win/win situation. So here I am with a post to a concept we see too often…loc maintenance gone astray.
Hopefully by this time, you have come to realize that being natural doesn’t mean being lazy. Your delicate tresses deserve all the attention they can get. However, time is not always our friend and we are left with less time to do what we need to do. Yet, have no fear. Sometimes doing a little bit everyday can make up for what takes hours in a day. So here we go:

‘loc maintenance: it is good practice to get your maintenance done on a regular scheduled basis, if you want a clean, neat look. It’s hard to argue how often is often enough without a personal assessment. (We are always available for FREE consultations, dbl wink) However, those close and dear probably don’t have a problem letting u know, when its time. If funds/time is on the low end, simply going in and carefully making sure that your ‘locs are not growing together can help preserve your maintenance and help save your ‘locs. It doesn’t seem like much, but your locitician will thank and praise you for not having to repave your head from the jungle you have allowed to grow.

Now, for all my other natural beauties, I have an extra tidbit for you. Most natural hairstyles are good for 1-2 weeks max. Keep in mind I said most, braids can last about the same amount of time and the twist-out can last just as long, giving you about a total of 4 weeks max altogether. However, it is very important for you to detangle your hair once the style has lived its’ course. The damage that can be caused from you not detangling can lead to matted hair or the first stages of budding ‘locs. Far too often I am left scolding my clients for not attempting something (i.e. comb, brush, fingers) in their hair because now I am left with attempting to save matted hair. You will end up spending more money then you saved. In my opinion that defeats the whole purpose. Not to mention you run the risk of losing length and damaging your hair further.

While, there are a multitude of reasons/excuses that can lead to you missing your regular scheduled hair regimen, not doing anything can lead you to where you don’t want to be. We like happy healthy hair. Taking a few minutes of your time can help you achieve just that, healthy hair…the nature’s course way!

Nature's Course throws an event...check it out!

As a means to provide a service back to “our” community. It brings to mind the ideology “knowledge without application is useless.” (This ideology is courtesy of one of my followers on Twitter). I decided to feature this video in our blog because every “natural” can relate.

In the beginning, the idea to go natural can seem appealing for a multitude of reasons. One could blame it on the cry of global warming and the fears that have arisen from the notion that our planet will fail us because we have failed it. Media has cornered us with the resolve that we must return to the natural way of life. Now, there are more organic choices and push for conservation and recycling has become a very important way of life. Regardless, of the reasoning behind your idea; you pursue the notion.

In the search to do what is “natural,” we turn to those currently on that same journey. Now, it’s very important to note that everyone’s journey is truly unique and different. For those reasons, it is hard to know what works and what doesn’t work. So we fall on trial and error. While trial and error is very crude and gives results, it also shows us the pitfalls in the worst way. The worst way is to have to wear the results; until we have something new to try. In some cases, you can fall back on that which has already worked. This can be a long stressful, frustrating adventure or journey, you pick. Now would be a good time to reflect upon the basis for the discussion, the video at hand.

I will not waste time evaluating the use of her language or grammar. She does a wonderful job of explaining why and what she is frustrated about. I commend her for being public about what could have been a phone call or a silent rant within her head as she went back to work. What I did take from this, is I (or we, because I am a representation of the natural hair salon, I work at) need to do a better job with providing information as it concerns natural hair. Videos and blogs do a great job with relaying information across the masses through the use of the internet. However, at some point it is okay to sort out additional avenues for one-on-one personable information.

I have composed a list of ideas/notions that yield outstanding results:

- look and see if your city or area has any natural hair workshops coming up. I have noticed that they are starting to pop up more often then you may know. (as they become known to us, I like to post them on our website)

-some areas also have natural hair meet-ups, if your area doesn’t think about starting one. It’s a lot easier then you think and the network can yield some very promising results

-natural hair salons, I can’t speak for all but some, such as ourselves, offer free consultations. While you might not agree with everything they have to say, I am certain you will walk away knowing more then you knew prior.

Feel free to leave comments or suggestions…

Happy Naturalhair New Year's Eve

So they year has come to a close and the beginning of a New Year starts tonite. I blame the weather in Houston because it only gets cold a few days a week and then we sky rocket back to sub tropical weather. I guess in some ways it can be enjoyable. While others, are seeing snow and feeling the effects of true winter. However, no matter what the weather is like. The Holidays are HERE!

There is so much to do to prepare. But, since our main concern is hair. We get excited to see naturals and their hairstyles. This is a great time of the year to show your family, friends, etc. Just what being natural can really do for you. I have seen some really nice elaborate styles. As well as, did a sew-in for a natural kinky fro (yes, you can do that). It was great and the style and hair looked real and most important, you couldn't tell the difference.

I will make this post brief because the holidays always bring a rush of new/old clients. I have been limited on time since last month. But, I wanted to take the time to wish everyone a Happy Holidays and feel free to submit pictures of some of your holiday styles. Great way to encourage and uplift our natural hair community.

The Decision to Go Natural

At some point, a decision is made and then an action occurs. Sometimes the struggle to decide on what is good for oneself can be ongoing and engaging. Some research countless avenues before the stroke of the final decision. While others fly with the wind and the thought process is but a flight of more action and less thought. Regardless of what drives you there, you make the decision to go natural.

For most, it is the only way to go once they realize who they are and what being natural entails. Yet, the process of going natural is a road less traveled. Most naturals face opposition in many different forms. The opposition can lead to an end to a journey that never falls short of an ongoing battle. It is not easy being natural. There are no clear guidelines. There is no uniform path. Those that have succeeded cannot always teach or guide their peers. It is a struggle.

However, the tool for success is patience. Having to start from the very beginning, not knowing what the final product is going to look like takes faith. However, I have not found a natural short on faith. I have found naturals short on patience. I understand that we live in a time where technology has made things “faster” to say the least. We have microwaves that can cook whole dinners in minutes. We have transportation devices that make long distance travel a blink in the eye of sleep. However, when you go natural you give up these “faster” devices to return to what is.

There is no fast pace in the natural world. The few animals that can achieve fast speeds can only do so for short periods of time because there are limitations and consequences to such pressures. Yet, taking ones time to truly learn and grow with your natural is the natural way. In fact, it’s the best way. Attempting to speed up the natural process can cause damage that in some cases is irreparable. It is a very delicate process. However, once you master the “natural” way the rewards are well worth the fight.

The holidays are approaching and the seasons have changed. Hair regimens are changing, diets will be changing. There will be a lot of change happening all the way up to the New Year’s. Time will even seem to slow down for many. Yet, the virtue of patience should be your guide through the perils of being a natural and staying a natural. With your faith you have to embrace and understand the true virtue of patience. After all, it was your decision to go natural.

Natural Stylist Insight and Rebuttal

Quite recently I came across a blog that dealt with one naturals visit to a salon and her tragic experience. The author of the story then commences to state why she will never go to a hair salon again. Needless to say the comments that followed agreed and commence to bashing stylists completely. While, the blog did not label me or anyone I know, being a natural hair stylist, it hurt nonetheless. So I have decided to dedicate this weeks blog to those issues.

I will only talk from my experience, since that is all I know. The first issue that the young lady had was that the shampoo girl shampooed her hair a few more times then she would like. I have had clients come in and they are DIYer’s and have had to tell them that whatever they are making and using at home is over saturating their hair. While you may think after one shampoo your hair is clean. If you are using heavy oils in your hair, one shampoo is not enough. Oil and dirt go hand n hand. If you take a bath and you still smell your perfume/cologne I would think that you need a stronger soap or need to bathe again.

The second issue was the issues of detangling her hair. Now, here is where as a stylist I can get nasty. While the majority of the natural hair I deal with is curly in nature. It is VERY necessary to comb thru your hair OFTEN. If you don’t comb your hair OFTEN and then come in and get upset because I have to detangle and you don’t take any time into doing yourself regardless of how/what I do, it is not goin to be nice. I jump on my girls very often because they don’t want to detangle their hair so they leave it up to me and the greater time of your appointment is spent with me trying to use TLC that you neglect with your own hair.

The third issue was the issue of the heat that was applied to her hair. There are many misconceptions about the use of heat on hair. When done RIGHT, there is little for you to have to worry about in the regards of damage. I like to use the analogy of cotton fabric and the iron. Your hair is very similar. You want to apply the heat to iron out the wrinkles but not enough to burn the shirt. For the damage is the same, irreplaceable. Normally, there is going to be some amount of smoke (steam) when applying heat especially if your hair has been shampooed (washed). As to the matter of how much is too much, I can not say. While, this issue is a little harder to determine what was right/wrong. The truth is that overtime you will be able to tell if too much heat was applied or not. However, with virgin hair it may take more heat and time to get it to submit to what you are attempting.

I do not mean to step on any toes. I was not at the appointment so I can not say who is right/wrong. However, I can shed light on the perils of a stylist and share knowledge of my experiences. I did mention in my comment on the blog that often times stylist or expected to deliver a very polished refine product. However, sometimes what we are given to work with hasn’t been kept up.

Natural Hair Blogger Spotlight

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 194px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dCr7jABImZc/TKI1FkVK2UI/AAAAAAAAABA/LT3bpDb6YLs/s320/l_7b85221e96c749f0bc96495f195ce3aa.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522034462877735234" />
There are plenty of natural hair bloggers out there and some deserve recognition. So for our first feature we decided to interview the author of Hair With Purpose. Enjoy!

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a wife a currently a stay at home mom. Until last year I worked with developmentally delayed adults helping them to become more independent. Due to health problems I had to be out of work for quite some time and ended up loving the time at home with my children. I ended up deciding to stay home, spend more time with my family and devote more time to writing and blogging.

I am the co-founder of the Interracial Family Organization (www.interracialfamily.org) and Originator of Hair With Purpose.

Q: What motivated you to start your hair blogging site?
I have always kept my daughters hair natural and would try a lot of new styles. People would stop and ask me who did my daughters hair and were surprised when I told them I did. There is this stereotype that White women cannot due black hair. It’s true there aren’t a lot of resources for us out there. I wanted to help teach people, especially those not accustomed to working with black/biracial hair how to treat it properly and what products work the best without doing damage to the hair.

Q: What sets your site apart from other bloggers?
When I started blogging I offended another blogger by posting my link on their blog. I was told how rude I was and that bloggers just don’t do that. Well, I wanted to make my blog a safe place to share. I want people to share their ideas, pictures, blog links, giveaway information, opinions and ideas. I want share what I know and at the same time learn from others.

Q:What can you say your proudest accomplish has been since you started your blogspot?
When companies started contacting me to ask us to review their products I was so surprised and flattered! When people started e-mailing me for advice and asking me to do their hair I was like, “ME? Really?” I was so surprised and felt such a sense of accomplishment that people were actually listening to me and trusting me with their hair.

Q: What do you find is your commanding source of direction when it comes to natural hair?
I want people to realize that they are beautiful just the way they are NATURAL! I love love love natural hair, love natural curls and black/biracial hair. Care for your natural hair, keep it moisturized and happy and it will make you shine!

Q: Do you have any advice for those with natural hair or transitioning?
Be patient. Your hair WILL grow. Moisture with everything you do. If you use a product make sure it moisturizes along with whatever else it’s suppose to do. Throw out your shampoo, cleanse less, and moisturize more. Conditioner makes an awesome “shampoo”. Listen to your hair not the haters questioning you about going natural and pressuring you to use chemicals. What about your hair? While the weather may change, the product that you use to protect and style your hair should too. If its raining, we put on cloths to protect against getting wet, if it’s cold you dress warmer, and if it’s warm we tend to take off more.
We know that hair is not a living organism, however it is adored nonetheless. In fact, healthy hair care is a form of beauty. Yet, weather affects everybody’s hair. So why not respond to the sound of nature. The cold seasons bring in low humidity and dry air. The hot season brings in high humidity and moisture rich air. While geography can affect your weather greatly, we all suffer from one of the other at some time or another. Unfortunately, we don’t all share the same weather patterns so products vary accordingly; as does hair.
It is very hard to find a product that answers every aspect of the weather and hair, all the time. Just like it’s impossible to believe that we can wear one piece of clothing and it protect from rain, sleet, snow, and the sun. I doubt it would be stylish (cause we are vain, this is beauty we are speaking of), manageable and comfortable. So as the weather changes, your product should change.
Know your hair type and address what the weather may be doing to help or hurt your hair. It will take some time to experiment and find what works under certain circumstances. But, understand that you do want to change your product regimen because the weather changes and affects us accordingly.
Secondly, your stylist should be able to give you a yea or nay on any product that you feel will/won’t work best with your hair type, if you have one. Happy journeying!

Hair Buildup, Daily Washing and Alternatives

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> I made a comment that it really isn’t necessary to wash your hair daily. A fellow chatter commented that she has dirt buildup from being outside daily and that is why she NEEDS to wash it daily. I started to really go in on her. But, after thinking about, why not use that energy to write a blog and set the truth straight. So buildup here we come.

Buildup is typically described as a dirt, debris and excess styling products that are left unto the hair. It typically flakes off during styling. A good indicator of buildup is to attempt to scratch the surface of the skin with your fingernail. If what shows up is pasty then you have buildup. If it is flaky, then you have dandruff (a different story, altogether). This is a great way for determining if you should be washing daily for buildup.

Buildup is undesired because it makes the hair dull and lifeless. As well as, generate odor in the hair. Keep in mind that buildup came come from a variety of sources: conditioners, shampoo, gels, mousse, sprits, grease. Typically anything that you apply to your hair if done in excess or are water insoluble can lead to buildup. It is possible to accumulate buildup daily but, your hair type determines how often this may be an issue.

Straight hair tends to create buildup faster because of the secretion of sebum oil and its ability to run the shaft of the hair. Curly hair tends to be on the low end of the spectrum. While there is still sebum secretion it doesn’t sit as well and doesn’t get absorbed into the hair as quickly. This is why curly hair can be seen as dull and easy to strip and over wash.

Now you might have noticed that I mentioned that some shampoos and conditioners can contribute to your buildup problem. So you may be thinking, how am I to combat that. There are two cheap remedies that we use in the shop all the time. One is known as an Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse (ACV) and the other is baking soda. You mix both with a bit of water and let sit or you massage into the scalp and rinse. No buildup.

There are quite a few clarifying shampoos that would help with taking the excess out of your hair and they work fine too. But, the idea is if you do have naturally curly hair then daily washing is not a good resort. Buildup can accumulate daily but within that is also oils that the scalp secretes to protect and enrich the hair, you don’t want to strip everything and further the damage to your hair.

One step closer to healthy hair and that is Nature’s Course…

Rainy Days and Natural Hair

<img style="float:right; So I decided to write a short fun insight on the rainy day and see what happens, lol!

If you are located anywhere in Houston, or the surrounding areas, you know that today is a "Super Rainy Day." It is suppose to rain all week and yes that means possible flooding EVERYWHERE. But, with the downpour of rain does comes a shimmer of hope in the dark clouds. Those of us with natural hair could care less about the rain and how it affects our hair, because it DOESN'T.

There is so much freedom in knowing that although you will deal with wet, sticky clothes the last of your worries is your hair. It brings a bright sunny smile to my face. So for the next week, it maybe raining but I know that the natural hair community will be walking with a lot of happy pep in our steps as we move through the weather.

Don't forget the silent laughter we share when we see others run for their lives as they try to avoid the rain...the sky is falling, the sky is falling!

With that note, I pull my rain jacket close and head off to my destination. Thanks for staying tune and maybe I will be able to better understand my posting dilemma on a later date. Happy Journeys!

Coloring Hair Basics

Coloring hair is truly an art. While the best bet for no mistakes is a professional hair stylist, there still remain an unlimited number of Do-It-Yourself kits in any hair supply; so, why not?

There is no way to learn everything you need to know about color in a day. It truly takes skill and experience to master the beautiful art of transforming hair from any color to a desired color. However, there a few pointers we can touch to help improve your experience.

DEEP CONDITION. If you have read any of my previous post, you can account to my testimony on Deep Condition, especially natural hair. Deep conditioning days before you apply the color, and definitely well after you have applied the color, will help with the accepting and longevity of the color. The chemical process of permanent color leaves hair dry. African American hair in its natural state is dry, so coloring will increase your chances of damaging you hair, especially if you have already chemically treated your hair.

DAMAGED HAIR. First and foremost, the only resolve to damaged hair is to cut it off. It cannot be restored. Coloring damaged hair will result in damaging your hair more. It will increase breakage and further strip your hair of vitality.

LIGHTER SHADES. Lighting hair is not for the inexperienced. Normally lighting hair more than a few shades requires a two step process. Also, the lighting process will leave hair almost bone dry. Not conditioning lightened hair will result in breakage and very dry brittle ends.

HAIR COLOR TYPE. There are four traditional types of hair color temporary, semi-permanent, demi-permanent and permanent. Knowing the different types can help and assist whatever your coloring goal is. The different types have advantages and disadvantages. Do your research.

HENNA. Many ‘naturals’ have recently found solace in henna, a plant based “natural” vegetable dye. Henna is a semi-permanent to permanent type hair color with repeated use. The initial application deposits a reddish orange into the hair shaft. Additional applications result in a building of the deposit yielding into red and then auburn. However, henna does have an adverse effect to perms and switching to industrial coloring. The tint from henna last for months and thus creates problems when switching to a different coloring technique.

While the joys of changing one’s hair color have been around for years the adverse effects can be damaging and unpleasant to the public eye. Be sure to read the instructions on any box thoroughly. Not all dyes or products are created equal. It may also be useful to purchase more than one box. Just in case you run out or waste some of the product.
I think it is very important to note that there is a lot of misguided information out there. The internet makes it very easy for ANYONE with an opinion to express it. The sad fact is that a lot of surfers find this misguided information and have no bases for discerning truth from fiction. In some cases, the only true test is time.

Today I wanted to sit down and tackle the notion of washing dreadlocks or ‘locs. I want to start by saying that I am a licensed natural hairstylist. I have worn my ‘locs for what will be seven years. I work underneath a Master Loctician who also worked under a Master Loctician for a number of years before obtaining the title. I am very proud of my ‘locs and love making others just as beautiful as mine.

It is important to note that with most things, the amount of time and maintenance you put into your ‘loc care will show as your ‘locs mature and grow. I do realize that there is a lot of do-it-yourselfers out there and do not feel they should pay the salon price for regular maintenance. However, it is also important to note that we have very professional clients (business woman/men, engineers, doctors, etc) that come in every two weeks to ensure that their ‘locs stay fresh, clean and maintained.

So to the matter of washing ‘locs, I do not understand why anyone would suggest anyone with starter ‘locs NOT to wash their hair for six months to a year. What is important is to know is that there is a very particular way to wash when you have starter ‘locs. You do not use a comb or brush to wash any ‘locs. That defeats the purpose of allowing the ‘locs to mature and bud. When washing ‘locs you want to pay more attention to your scalp as opposed to your hair. The lather will eventually saturate your hair and then will wash out any sweat, dust within the hair. So in a nutshell, you want to wash the scalp but not UNDO the hair that is beginning to ‘loc.

To the matter of frequency of hair washes: once every 7 to 10 days. African American hair is very brittle and dry NATURALLY. Washing your hair on a daily basis can cause breakage, frizz, dry and very dull hair. This is very uni-lateral for all traditional African American hair; natural or relaxed. This is also VERY true for ‘locs. It’s important to note that when I mention washing I am referring to using some form of soap and water. If you sweat a lot, and I do because Houston has heat advisory indexes that last for weeks at a time, you can RINSE the scalp with water. But, it is also very important to make sure that your hair completely dries.

If you can any comments or questions, please feel free. There is so much more to tackle in the regards of proper ‘loc care and do intend to get around to it. But, for now…Nature's Course.

Great Natural Pitstops

Often enough in my many journeys into the natural hair community (via the net), I found some bloggers that are in my opinion pretty good resources. We had a client that had made an appointment to come in to get micro-braids, a protective style. She was pregnant and the doctor was going to induce labor on July 15th.

There is an old saying when a baby is ready to come, they come. She went into labor during her appointment. We called the paramedics. However, my mother and I made a pallet on the floor to get her ready just in case she had the baby before the EMS arrived. No sooner had she laid down her water broke and seconds later you could see the baby head emerging. Within minutes we delivered a very healthy baby girl, Mariah. She was cleaned and ready when the paramedics arrived to take the baby and mother to the hospital.

Childbirth is truly amazing and we are grateful there were no complications that arose. We were very happy to be of assistance and witness Natural Child Birth in all its grandeur. Who would have thought that natural hair and natural childbirth would be sharing the same room.

Protective Styles and Maintainence

So we need to talk about taking care of your natural hair. It seems crazy but a lot of women come into the shop and have almost never put a comb thru their hair since they starrted goin natural. That is not healthy hair! I understand that we do have curly hair and that while a rat tooth comb can seem like th eenemy, it isn't.

Protective styles are made to really find an alternative way to wear the hair outside of just out or in an afro. However, wearing the hair in a style for too long can cause damage. for example, we had a porspective client come in with very, damaged hair. She wore braids, a protective hairstyle, for 3 months at a time. She didn't have a normal regimen of deep conditioning or anything for that matter. She was very dissatisfied with her starter 'locs and ended up walking out with what she walked in with; untreated, un-styled damage hair. We do not like seeing unhappy clients. But, the reality of the situation is you have to take care of your hair to see good results.

You get in what you put in. To the young lady that just left, we are sorry we couldn't accommodate you. However, I do hope that you take the advice to wash, comb and brush your hair effectively. Who knows, we might see you back and you will be ready for healthy natural hair.

To all my readers and followers, please ask me. I don't claim to know everything. But, I promise to help you and who knows what we don't know, we can learn together.

Frizz no, Deep Conditioner YES!

A good hair topic to cover is frizzy hair because it affects all hair types. Regardless if you are in transition waiting for your Big Chop or you are in between relaxers, frizzy hair knows no limits. It is a nuisance and above all else an eye sore. We have all seen frizzy hair; you might be looking at it right now.

Often enough I hear/see clients argue about the frizzness of their hair and what can they do to combat the frizz. The first thing to note is that this is a clear sign that your hair is damaged. The damage can come from a variety of sources: chemically treating your hair, coloring, extensive summer heat, the sun, winter winds, hats and or scarfs. While the only effective cure for damaged hair is to cut it completely out, there are options.

One very important option is Deep Conditioning. Deep conditioning helps to restore moisture, vitality and manageability to your damaged hair. Keep in mind that it will not completely undo the damage to your hair. What it will do is prevent further damage to that which is damaged and prevent damage to the new hair growth. When done right, a deep conditioner goes in and smooths down the “frizzed” outer layer of the hair shaft. This gives hair a more shiner, healthy appearance and it is smooth to the touch.

If you are using a deep conditioner and not seeing results, here are some key factors to take in:

- Any deep conditioner that you put into your hair and washes out in 5 minutes is not a deep conditioner, it’s a crème rinse or detangler. It is only coating you hair and not working its way into that outer layer to manage the frizz. They are good for everyday use but they do not provide long lasting results.

- When applying the conditioner you need to make sure that you comb the product from the scalp to the root of your hair. You want to thoroughly coat the hair. However, you don’t want a large amount of excess on the hair.

- A deep conditioner normally requires a cap and anywhere from 10 -20 minutes waiting time. The cap holds in heat allowing the product to penetrate deep into the hair shaft. The longer waiting time ensures that the product is given ample time to work.

- Results normally can take about 4 – 6 weeks. Remember that due to the nature of your damage, it may be necessary for you to deep condition your hair once a week. After you begin to notice results you want to move to once a month on average.

-Keep in mind of where you live and if humidity is an issue, and it is here in Houston, u may want to use a deep conditioner that has humectants to help lock in moisture. (upcoming future topic)

There are many different products on the market and I honestly haven’t used them all, lol! What I would suggest is if you have a professional stylist you go to, ask him/her. There are so many different hair types out there and many different conditioners that work best with specific hair types. But, I can promise you that the results are worth the wait, money and time.

If you don’t have a professional natural hair stylist, and you’re looking for one and you are in the Houston area, come check us out! Let me remind you that no battle was won overnight. As well as, rarely when u plant the first seeds do the first produce become your best. Anything that was every worth anything had to be fought for. Now the video I am about to feature makes me shake my head with extreme disgust. This is the very mind setting that destroys the minds of the weak and ignorant. Embrace yourself, it hurts my heart...

Inspirational Hair Journeys

There is nothing better then a before and after commentary of what someone just like you is doing or did to get to where they are. You get an endless resource of websites advertising, individuals showing their own personal success/failure and mounds of crap, in my opinion. Nonetheless, you shuffle through hoping to find the answer to a situation that plagues every single person on this planet. Some choose to do something about it, while others; do nothing with pride. There is definitely an art to great looking, healthy hair.
I wish I could tell you that you have stumbled upon the ominous answer to all your hair needs. What you have found is a genuine resource that is here to educate and instruct on what is safe, useful and efficient. I plan to primarily focus on Black Hair Care. Yet, some of the fundamentals of hair itself can be used on any hair type.
We are a beauty/barber salon located in Houston, TX. We are walking distance from Texas Southern University. We are also here to provide you with all your professional hair care needs. We believe that good hair care should start at home. As a stylist, there is a lot we can do. But, imagine the limits when you are giving a good product and told to make it look better. As opposed to a damage product that someone wants to magically transform into good. I can work miracles, but there are limits.
Feel free to submit questions and our tips for what has worked for you. If you have a video, we would be more than happy to feature you on the site. Stay tuned for links to helpful resources for what you can do at home and make a difference you want the world to see!
